We investigate the interplay of phonons and correlations in superconducting pairing by introducing a model Hamiltonian with on-site repulsion and couplings to several vibration branches having the Cu-O plane of the cuprates as a paradigm. We express the electron-phonon coupling (EP) through two force constants for O-Cu and O-O bond stretchings. Without phonons, this reduces to the Hubbard Model, and allows purely electronic W=0 pairing. A W=0 pair is a two-body singlet eigenstate of the Hubbard...

Using numerical techniques, we study the collapse of a scalar field configuration in the Newtonian limit of the spherically symmetric Einstein--Klein--Gordon (EKG) system, which results in the so called Schr\"odinger--Newton (SN) set of equations. We present the numerical code developed to evolve the SN system and topics related, like equilibrium configurations and boundary conditions. Also, we analyze the evolution of different initial configurations and the physical quantities associated...

We propose an approach to formulating string theory in a curved spacetime, which is based on the connection between the states of the WZW model for the isometry group of a background spacetime metric and the representations of the corresponding quantum group. In this approach the string states scattering amplitudes are defined by certain evaluations of the theta spin networks for the associated quantum group. We examine the evaluations given by the spin network invariants defined by the spin...

Long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) accompany the deaths of some massive stars and hence, since massive stars are short lived, are a tracer of star formation activity. Given that GRBs are bright enough to be seen to very high redshifts, and detected even in dusty environments, they should therefore provide a powerful probe of the global star formation history of the universe. The potential of this approach can be investigated via submm photometry of GRB host galaxies. Submm luminosity also...

Using detailed mock galaxy redshift surveys (MGRSs) we investigate the abundance and radial distribution of satellite galaxies. The mock surveys are constructed using the conditional luminosity function (CLF), and are compared against data from the 2dFGRS. We use Monte Carlo Markov Chains to explore the full posterior distribution of the CLF parameter space, and show that the average relation between light and mass is tightly constrained. The radial number density distribution of satellite...

We review a number of results for the spectrum and inclusive decays of heavy quarkonium systems which can be derived from QCD under well controlled approximations. They essentially follow from the hierarchy of scales in these systems, which can be efficiently exploited using non-relativistic effective field theories. In particular, we discuss under which conditions non-relativistic potential models emerge as effective theories of QCD.

The random antiferromagnetic two-leg and zigzag spin-1/2 ladders are investigated using the real space renormalization group scheme and their complete phase diagrams are determined. We demonstrate that the first system belongs to the same universality class of the dimerized random spin-1/2 chain. The zigzag ladder, on the other hand, is in a random singlet phase at weak frustration and disorder. Otherwise, we give additional evidence that it belongs to the universality class of the random...

When the cosmological constant of spacetime is derived from the 5D induced-matter theory of gravity, we show that a simple gauge transformation changes it to a variable measure of the vacuum which is infinite at the big bang and decays to an astrophysically-acceptable value at late epochs. We outline implications of this for cosmology and galaxy formation.

In this paper we construct finite dimensional representations of the wreath product symplectic reflection algebra H(k,c,N,G) of rank N attached to a finite subgroup G of SL(2,C) (here k is a number and c a class function on the set of nontrivial elements of G). Specifically, we show that if W is an irreducible representation of S_N whose Young diagram is a rectangle, and Y an irreduible finite dimensional representation of H(c,1,G), then the representation M=W\otimes Y^N of H(0,c_0,N,G) can be...

Extended gauge models and the Randall-Sundrum model with extra-dimension predict the existence of TeV-mass resonances. The LHC potential for a five sigma level discovery was investigated as described in this document. Final states containing large invariant mass di-muons from ${Z}^{\prime}$ and the RS1 graviton were studied. The possibility of discriminating between different ${Z}^{\prime}$ model by measuring the muon forward-backward asymmetry was investigated. The determination of the spin of...

We present a new approach to the statistical study and modelling of number counts of faint point sources in astronomical images, i.e. counts of sources whose flux falls below the detection limit of a survey. The approach is based on the theory of alpha-stable distributions. We show that the non-Gaussian distribution of the intensity fluctuations produced by a generic point source population -- whose number counts follow a simple power law -- belongs to the alpha-stable family of distributions....

A novel method was developed for the extraction of short emission times of light particles from the projectile-like fragments in peripheral deep-inelastic collisions in the Fermi energy domain. We have taken an advantage of the fact that in the external Coulomb field particles are evaporated asymmetrically. It was possible to determine the emission times in the interval 50-500 fm/c using the backward emission anisotropy of alpha-particles relative to the largest residue, in the reaction 28Si +...

The Casimir force, which vanishes in the coaxial situation, is evaluated for both small and large eccentricities using the proximity approximation. The cylindrical configuration offers various experimental advantages with respect to the parallel planes or the plane-sphere geometries, leading to favourable conditions for the search of extra-gravitational...

A pebbling move on a graph consists of taking two pebbles off of one vertex and placing one pebble on an adjacent vertex. In the traditional pebbling problem we try to reach a specified vertex of the graph by a sequence of pebbling moves. In this paper we investigate the case when every vertex of the graph must end up with at least one pebble after a series of pebbling moves. The cover pebbling number of a graph is the minimum number of pebbles such that however the pebbles are initially placed...

We are interested in analyzing the effect of bandwidth sharing for telecommunication networks. More precisely, we want to calculate which routes are bottlenecks by means of large deviations techniques. The method is illustrated in this paper on a star network, where the bandwidth is shared between customers according to the so-called min policy. We prove a sample path large deviation principle for a rescaled process n^{-1}Q_{nt}, where Q_t represents the joint number of connections at time t....

Ricci_rot is an educational tool which visualizes surfaces of revolution moving under Ricci flow. That these surfaces tend to remain embedded in R3 is what makes direct visualization possible. The numerical lessons gained in developing this tool may be applicable to numerical simulation of Ricci flow of other surfaces. Similarly for simple 3-dimensional manifolds like the 3-sphere, with a...

The effect of an insulating barrier located at a distance $a$ from a NS quantum point contact is analyzed in this work. The Bogoliubov de Gennes equations are solved for NINS junctions (S: anysotropic superconductor, I: insulator and N: normal metal), where the NIN region is a quantum wire. For $% a\neq0$, bound states and resonances in the differential conductance are predicted. These resonances depend on the symmetry of the pair potential, the strength of the insulating barrier and $a $. Our...

In this paper we report results of collisional N-body simulations of the dynamical evolution of equal-mass star clusters containing a massive central black hole. Each cluster is composed of between 5,000 to 180,000 stars together with a central black hole which contains between 0.2% to 10% of the total cluster mass. We find that for large enough black hole masses, the central density follows a power-law distribution with slope \rho \sim r^{-1.75} inside the radius of influence of the black...

The two papers in this series analyze quantum invariant differential operators for quantum symmetric spaces in the maximally split case. In this paper, we complete the proof of a quantum version of Harish-Chandra's theorem: There is a Harish-Chandra map which induces an isomorphism between the ring of quantum invariant differential operators and a ring of Laurent polynomial invariants with respect to the dotted action of the restricted Weyl group. We find a particularly nice basis for the...

Chiral perturbation theory (CPT), the low-energy effective theory of QCD, can be used to describe QCD observables in the low-energy region in a model-independent way. At any given order in the chiral expansion, CPT introduces a finite number of parameters that encode the short-distance physics and that must be determined from experiment or numerical lattice QCD simulations. In this thesis, we calculate a number of hadronic observables in the quenched and partially quenched versions of CPT:...

Let T be the quasi-nilpotent DT-operator. By use of Voiculescu's amalgamated R-transform we compute the moments of $(T-\lambda 1)^*(T-\lambda 1)$, where $\lambda \in \mathbb C$, and the Brown-measure of $T+\sqrt{\epsilon} Y$, where Y is a circular element *-free from T for $\epsilon>0$. Moreover we give a new proof of \'Sniady's formula for the moments $\tau(((T^*)^k T^k)^n)$ for $k,n\in \mathbb N$.

We study continuous embeddings of the long line L into L^n (n>1) up to ambient isotopy of L^n. We define the direction of an embedding and show that it is (almost) a complete invariant in the case n=2 for continuous embeddings, and in the case n>3 for differentiable ones. Finally, we prove that the classification of smooth embeddings L \to L^3 is equivalent to the classification of classical oriented knots.
